What is throttling and do I need to use this?
Throttling is sending your data out during a particular time frame, a certain day and to a certain number of recipients per hour. It is important to throttle your data when sending your campaigns to build a positive and reputable sending IP, and to build on positive sending behaviours.
Not throttling your data and continuously sending batch emails out to all of your data can impact your IP negatively and can put you at risk of being blocked by certain providers such as Microsoft; who actively look at these sending patterns and behaviours to differentiate from spam senders.
How do I throttle within my journey?
To throttle your data in your journey, you can do this by adding in an orange delay component.
You will then have 3 options to choose from:
Delay for a certain number of days/hours/minutes.
Not before a certain date or time
Send windows
The send windows are where the throttling comes in, here you can select the days, and times and the number of contacts to be sent to per the hour. You can add a number of different intervals here also, for example you can choose to send 9-10am, then say 12-2, then 6-7pm, so that these are spread over the day.
You can add also add more than one send window, as well as different intervals throughout the day. For example you can send in the morning when you feel clients will be most likely to open emails, or over lunch or in the evening. It is a good idea to try different intervals to establish what works best for your company and the contacts you are sending to.
