In line with the latest updates from Yahoo and Google, and the Google Email Sender Guidelines, Force24 has now deployed the One-Click List-Unsubscribe headers for all customers. This builds on the List-Unsubscribe header [RFC 2369]. Google gave all bulk senders until 1 June 2024 to implement this feature in their email communications.
What is the One-Click List-Unsubscribe?
The one-click list-unsubscribe header is a feature designed to make it easier for recipients to unsubscribe from mailing lists. This header is included in the email's metadata and provides a standardised way for email clients to offer an unsubscribe option directly in their interface, often as a button or link.
Key points about the One-Click List-Unsubscribe Header
1. Header Fields
List-Unsubscribe: This primary header can contain one or more URLs or mailto links that the recipient can use to unsubscribe.
List-Unsubscribe-Post: Sometimes used in conjunction with the List-Unsubscribe header, this specifies how to post the unsubscribe request (commonly with a one-click method).
2. Functionality
Mailto: Clicking a mailto link opens the user's email client with a pre-filled unsubscribe request email. The user just needs to send it to complete the unsubscribe process.
HTTP/HTTPS Link: Clicking this link takes the user to a web page where they can confirm their unsubscription with a single click.
3. Client Support
Major email clients like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook recognise this header and provide an easily accessible unsubscribe button, usually placed prominently at the top of the email.
4. Benefits
User Convenience: Provides a straightforward way for recipients to opt-out of emails they no longer wish to receive, reducing frustration and potential spam complaints.
Compliance: Helps senders comply with regulations like the CAN-SPAM Act and GDPR, which require easy opt-out methods for recipients.
5. Implementation example
Including the List-Unsubscribe header in your email marketing campaigns can improve user experience and maintain better list hygiene by ensuring that only interested recipients remain on your mailing list.
Myth-busting the One-Click Unsubscribe
A common misconception is that the one-click unsubscribe feature is thought to be in the body of the email. In this instance, it’s not. It’s in the message headers. Confusingly, the term "one-click unsubscribe" is often used for both the body content and the message header.
What do you need to have in place?
If you’re a Force24 customer, the One-Click List-Unsubscribe is already in place, and you do not need to take any further action. For those not using Force24, please check with your Email Service Provider or feel free to contact us. We can confirm if this feature is in place for you, and offer guidance if needed.
