When you are sending emails from Force24, either in a single-send campaign or an automated journey, you will need to select the relevant Audience Type for your content:

The options for this are either Marketing or Transactional.

The key difference in how the platform treats these audience types is that Marketing content takes into account the recipient's marketing preferences, i.e. if they have Unsubscribed or Opted-Out of that type of content, the system will uphold this and will not send the email to that recipient. Alternatively, a Transactional email will still send to Unsubscribed/Opted-Out contacts. To ensure GDPR compliance it is important that only genuinely transactional content is sent as such.

Transactional content is strictly functional and essential for the recipient to use your service.

Examples include order confirmations, password resets, account alerts, contractual changes, booking confirmations, or content download requests. These emails are not considered marketing and will send to contacts even if they have unsubscribed, as they are mandatory communications and not subject to marketing consent requirements.

No marketing or promotional content is allowed in transactional emails.

Marketing content is intended for promotional purposes, such as encouraging purchases, engagement, or highlighting new features.

Marketing emails require prior consent, must include an unsubscribe option, and will not be sent to contacts who have unsubscribed. If your message contains any promotional content, even subtle references or links encouraging engagement, it should be classified as marketing.

Golden Rule: If you add any marketing content to a transactional email, it legally becomes a marketing email and cannot be sent to unsubscribed users.

If you're ever unsure whether your content should be marked at transactional or marketing, please reach out to your account manager or our support team on the live chat.
